PHS Art of Video Production

COURSE DESCRIPTION
In this course, students will acquire the visual arts skills to create quality video productions. In keeping with Common Core Curriculum, there will be an emphasis on the uses of communication (speech, language and writing) and organizational skills. The course, which includes aesthetics, cultural aspects and the history of television and video production, is aligned with the State Board of Education Standards for Visual and Performing Arts. The Art of Video Production begins with a comparison of the mediums of film, television and video. Students learn the basic skills to produce their own videos, and then take an in-depth look at the nature of video communication production, including directing. Students will explore many aspects of film including, but not limited to, pre-production such as script writing and story boarding, camerawork, lighting, sound, music, foley and post-production skill such as editing and special effects. Students will apply these skills to produce a variety of projects for the teacher, themselves and the school. Students will also learn Basic Television Broadcasting skills using the PHS TV Studio. Integrated throughout the course are Career Technical Education Standards including basic academic skills, communication, career planning, technology, problem solving, safety, responsibility, ethics and teamwork.



COURSE GOAL

The goal of the program is to develop student’s technical skills, creativity, and teamwork as well as overall work habits while producing various Video Projects.



COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the Art of video Course students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in Basic Video production and Television Broadcasting. Students will also demonstrate the ability to share ideas and work cohesively with others.


GRADING

Students will be graded on Class Participation (attendance is important to success in the class), Group Projects, Individual Assignments and Written Assignments, including a daily Video Starter/Do Now (punctuality is must).
All assignments will be assessed by a pre-determined Rubric.


METHODS OF INSTRUCTION

Methods used will include, but not be limited to, Mini-Lectures, Video Examples,
Group Projects, Written Assignments and Class Discussion. This is a Hands-On Project Based class and the student’s ability to work well with others can determine overall grade.

EXTRA CREDIT & COMMUNITY SERVICE

For those interested Community Service can be obtained by filming school events. Extra Credit can be obtained by filming/editing personal projects or editing the filmed school events to be aired on Mediacast.
